ÁLVARO SIZA, SOUTO DE MOURA AND NUNO SAMPAIO AT THE OPENING OF THE 27TH UIA CONGRESS

The opening session of the 27th Congress of the International Union of Architects (UIA), the world’s largest forum on architecture and urbanism, taking place for the first time in Brazil, will have the participation of Álvaro Siza, Eduardo Souto de Moura, and the Executive Director of Casa da Arquitectura, Nuno Sampaio.

The opening of the Congress will be online on the 18th of July, and architect Siza Vieira will welcome the Congress’ Honour Committee.

The Portuguese Eduardo Souto de Moura and Nuno Sampaio, in dialogue with the Brazilian Carla Juaçaba, lead the first table of the Congress in a debate on contemporary architecture with references to the recently deceased architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, to whom the International Union of Architects has attributed this year the Gold Medal.

Mendes da Rocha, one of the most awarded Brazilian architects ever, was an honorary member of Casa da Arquitectura, an institution to which he donated his entire collection.

The 27th World Congress of Architects will take place from 18 to 22 July in a fully digital format.

Until the 22nd, participants will attend lectures with twenty of the most important names in world architecture and round tables with more than one hundred internationally awarded architects, in addition to presentations of works, cultural activities and awards.

Since March, nearly 90,000 people from more than 180 countries have been following the preparatory panels – an absolute record in the more than 70 years of the event held by the International Union of Architects every three years.
