Tide swimming pool
It was to be a simple saltwater tank, but the genius of Álvaro Siza Vieira turned it into a fundamental work of Portuguese architecture. Classified as a National Monument since 2011, the Leça da Palmeira Tidal Pool is now the subject of an entire book, the second of the A + A Books Single collection, which will be released on September 22 at 6 pm, at the border From the mirror of water where Siza imprisoned the sea.
The presentation of the book “Swimming on Leça Beach – A Pool On The Beach”, which has the support of the Municipality of Matosinhos and Casa da Arquitectura-Portuguese Architecture Center, will be attended by Álvaro Siza Vieira.
” Piscina na Praia de Leça-A Pool on the Beach” features an extensive presentation of descriptive memorabilia, drawings and photographs, including a writing by Álvaro Siza Vieira, a historical-critical text by Michel Toussaint and an analysis by João Gomes da Silva on landscape intervention. With photographs by Nuno Cera, the book also includes an analysis of the bathers’ careers by Pedro Vieira de Almeida, as well as testimonies of architects Diogo Seixas Lopes and Manuel Aires Mateus, and a film by Luís Urbano.
Unanimously highlighted by the importance it acquired in the creative route of the young architect of Matosinhos, the Pool of the Tides, inaugurated in 1966 and belonging by the Municipality of Matosinhos, gives form to an approach that underlines the relationship between the artificial and the natural. The book, it is said, has bilingual edition.
Each book in the A + A Books Single collection is dedicated to a single work of architecture, seeking to analyze it in a historical and critical perspective, supported by a specialist and the look of an artist. The first volume of the collection, which was launched in 2014, dealt with the Bloco das Águas Livres by the architects Nuno Teotónio Pereira and Bartolomeu Costa Cabral, and was selected for the Portuguese representation catalog at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale.
