21st edition of the Fernando Távora Award 2025 — Applications open until 11 August
Organised since 2005 by the Northern Regional Section of the Order of Architects (OASRN), the Award pays tribute to architect Fernando Távora, whose work and thinking had a profound impact on Portuguese architecture. In partnership with the Matosinhos City Council, Casa da Arquitectura and the Marques da Silva Foundation, and sponsored by Ageas Seguros, this award aims to highlight the role of travel as a tool for knowledge and cultural enrichment for architects.
Open to all full and honorary members (individuals) of the Order of Architects, with valid registration and in full exercise of their rights, the Award aims to promote direct contact with other realities and cultures, valuing the experience of travel as an integral part of architectural practice.
In memory of architect Fernando Távora, who influenced several generations of architects through his work as an architect and teacher, the OASRN promotes an annual award in the form of a travel grant for any architect registered with the Order of Architects – full members, individuals, with valid registration and in full exercise of their rights, or honorary members, individuals.
From his student days and throughout his life, Fernando Távora travelled incessantly to study the architecture of all eras on all continents in situ, using it, from 1958 to 2000, as the content and method of his teaching activity. His classes and his design practice consolidated, in Portugal and abroad, the idea that knowledge of history and culture is indispensable for the production of contemporary architecture. The Fernando Távora Award aims to highlight the important contribution of travel and direct contact with other realities in the formation of an architect's culture.
The selection of the best research trip proposal is the responsibility of a jury selected each year. In this edition, the jury will be composed of the following members: archaeologist, historian and communicator Joel Cleto; architect Andrea Soutinho (nominated by the Marques da Silva Foundation), architect Miguel Judas (nominated by Casa da Arquitectura) and architect Michele Cannatà (representing OASRN), as well as João Moura Martins (appointed by the family of architect Fernando Távora).
