The 10 finalists for the 2025 Luis Ferreira Alves International Photography Award have been announced
This initiative, which aims to establish itself as one of the most important international platforms dedicated to promoting architectural photography, attracted 1,495 entries from 99 countries this year.
The jury for the 2025 edition faced a particularly demanding selection process, given the exceptional technical quality, creativity, artistic maturity and critical vision of the photographic series submitted. The 10 finalist projects were distinguished precisely because they stood out in these criteria.
The winners — 1st, 2nd and 3rd places — will be announced at a public ceremony scheduled for Saturday, 28 June, at 4 pm, at Casa da Arquitectura, in Matosinhos. The event will feature a screening of the award-winning series, institutional interventions and a conversation with the members of the jury: architect Eduardo Souto de Moura and photographers Hélène Binet and Paulo Catrica.
The event will have a hybrid format, with guests attending in person and a live broadcast via Zoom, so that it can be followed internationally. It will include the screening of the finalist series, critical comments from the jury and a meeting with its members.
Exceptionally, the jury may also award Special Mentions to projects that, although not among the finalists, have demonstrated remarkable artistic and conceptual quality. These distinctions will be announced exclusively in an online gallery on the Award's official website and on its social media, and will not be included in the physical exhibition or printed catalogue.
With this approach, the Award reinforces its commitment to promoting new voices and perspectives in the field of architectural photography, while maintaining the integrity and rigour of the selection process.
The Luis Ferreira Alves Photography Award received around 1,500 entries, and the jury, unaware of the authors' identities, evaluated each project solely on its artistic and conceptual merits. The rules set out in the award regulations were strictly adhered to. The final selection reflects a diverse and inclusive understanding of architectural photography - encompassing political, social, artistic and cultural dimensions - and includes a wide range of visual languages and conceptual approaches.
