Open call for dancers

More information here.

Bodies in Urban Spaces is a moving path, choreographed for a group of dancers. Artists lead the audience through a variety of public and semi-public venues. A chain of physical interventions is prepared very quickly and, existing only temporarily, allows the viewer to perceive the place in a different way – in motion. Bodies in Urban Spaces is a temporary intervention in a diverse urban architectural environment. The intention of this work is to point out the urban functional structure and unveil the restricted possibilities of movement and behavior, as well as rules and limitations.

By placing the bodies in specific locations, the interventions provoke a thought process and produce some disquiet. Passersby, residents and the public are led to reflect on the urban environment and on the behavior and habits of their own movement. Bodies in Urban Spaces invites residents to tour their own city, establishing a stronger relationship with their neighborhood, district and city. The interventions are temporary, leaving no traces behind, but impressions in the memory of eyewitnesses.

WILLI DORNER

Willi Dorner lives and works in Vienna. His work includes stage pieces and site specific performances. Dorner is especially recognized for bringing audiences to experience everyday situations differently. He is the author of Bodies in Urban Spaces, presented in more than 80 cities, in which performers and dancers use urban spaces to challenge notions of sculpture and encourage reflection on everyday space. In addition to dance, Dorner has a deep interest in photography, film and visual arts, integrating them into some of his choreographic works. He was awarded the Österreichischer Tanzproduktionspreis 2000 and other international choreography awards. He received the BLAULAUT-Price for his performance Bodies in Urban Spaces, in the interdisciplinary art category, in 2011. Pearls 07 stands out among his films.

In 2019, Willi Dorner creates the play “Ballet de Causa Única” for the Companhia Instável, presented at the Teatro Constantino Nery, in Matosinhos, as part of the DDD Festival. Also in 2019, this piece is adapted for presentation in the spaces of Casa da Arquitectura, within the scope of its 2nd anniversary.

*Companhia Instável and Casa da Arquitectura have been attentive and receptive to the different comments on the integration of interpreters in this project. At no time, the objective of any of the entities was to 'mask' a false volunteer action. CI's founding principle is professionalization and the creation of opportunities for dancers and performers and this is what drives us. We confess, however, that when programming this project, we also accepted its simple formula, repeated over and over again all over the world: Willi Dorner arrives and occupies the space with bodies – diverse and expressive from each location – with whom he responds to his invitation and which, therefore, is part of his ephemeral work. The open call was a way to launch the invitation in Porto and address it to those who might have a special interest in getting closer to this creator and his process. The comments received make us think and, although we have always been clear on what is at stake, they will lead us to reflect on future projects.
