Casa da Arquitectura hosts the presentation of the Piranesi Prix de Rome to Álvaro Siza
The initiative, organised by Professor Pier Federico Caliari, and scientifically coordinated by a team of experts in architecture and archaeology – including architect Roberto Cremascoli, Professor Camilla Donantoni and Professor Valerio Tolve – will bring together teachers, architects and international personalities around a common mission: to rethink museography and the management of archaeological sites through innovative architecture that is sensitive to the historical context.
One of the highlights will be the ceremony to award the Piranesi Prix de Rome alla carriera to architect Álvaro Siza on 13 October at the Casa da Arquitectura, attended by leading figures in Portuguese architecture such as Gonçalo Byrne, João Luís Carrilho da Graça and Eduardo Souto de Moura.
Conímbriga, located a few kilometres from Coimbra, will be the main case study for this international workshop. Recognised as the most important Roman city on Portuguese soil, built on Celtic foundations and developed especially during the Flavian period, Conímbriga has remarkable remains such as the forum, the thermal baths and an aqueduct that is still visible. These elements will serve as the basis for architectural proposals aimed at protecting, enhancing and making this heritage more accessible.
The workshop will be intensive, alternating practical work with visits to emblematic sites. In addition to the Conímbriga Archaeological Park, participants will have the opportunity to visit leading institutions such as the Machado de Castro Museum, the Casa da Arquitectura – Portuguese Centre for Architecture, and the Serralves Foundation.
The work and project development sessions will take place between 14 and 17 October, culminating in a final public presentation. The initiative is proposed not only as a training space, but also as an experimental laboratory for new forms of dialogue between contemporary architecture and archaeological ruins, proposing solutions for the conservation, interpretation and enjoyment of historical sites.
Entities involved:
Casa da Arquitectura | Serralves Foundation | Conimbriga Archaeological Park and National Museum | Machado de Castro Museum | Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto
