Casa da Arquitectura joins the Energy Community launched by Lipor
The main aim of setting up this Intermunicipal Community is to produce and share electricity produced from the energy recovery of waste at LIPOR's plant, providing CER members with environmental, economic and social benefits.
The community involves 10 municipalities, including Matosinhos City Council, as well as APDL, Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto, STCP, Hospital de S. João and Águas e Energia do Porto, among others, with Casa da Arquitectura being the only cultural institution to be part of the group.
The creation of this northern community will enable the decentralised production of clean and renewable energy, as well as reducing energy bills without investment, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to national and European commitments to decarbonisation.
On the occasion, the Chairman of LIPOR's Board of Directors, José Manuel Ribeiro, said that "the Intermunicipal Energy Community that LIPOR is developing with its partners will begin with an annual dimension of around 170 GWh (gigawatt hours)", adding: "this electricity will reach thousands of 'connection points', serving activities as diverse as the public and decorative lighting of our streets and squares, sports pavilions, swimming pools, town halls, schools, hospitals, old people's homes, nurseries and kindergartens, libraries and houses of culture, theatres and markets".
For Lipor, "the year 2024 will therefore be the year of affirmation for this Intermunicipal Energy Community", which represents "LIPOR's vision, will and determination to change its own business model - and to take its business activity to the next level!", emphasised José Manuel Ribeiro.
