Catalogue ‘O que faz falta’ - 50 years of Portuguese architecture in democracy selected for Best Book Design From All Over the World 2026
The inclusion of the catalogue in this shortlist constitutes recognition of the rigor and the graphic and conceptual quality of the editorial work developed by Casa da Arquitectura, reinforcing its mission to disseminate and promote Portuguese architecture both nationally and internationally. The publication was designed by The Royal Studio (dir.), Ana Resende (dir.), Eunice Bastos, and Rita Constante.
A book that extends the reflection of the exhibition
Published in parallel with the homonymous exhibition presented by Casa da Arquitectura, the catalogue O que faz falta invites readers to reflect on the evolution of Portuguese architecture throughout the fifty years of democracy achieved after the 25th of April 1974.
The publication presents a selection of 50 works — 49 buildings and one project — which, according to the curators, illustrate architecture as a “reflection and incentive of the democratic regime in Portugal.” Far from being a mere historical overview, the book proposes a critical reflection on the role of architecture in building a more just, inclusive and democratic society.
A broad and multidisciplinary perspective
In addition to the record of the selected works, the catalogue includes six original essays by national and international authors, offering a deep and enriching perspective on architecture as a tool for social and urban transformation. These contributions add critical depth and a plurality of viewpoints, reinforcing the relevance of the catalogue as a cultural and scientific object.
The distinction with the 2025 Book Design Award and its subsequent selection for the international competition underline not only the quality of the publication’s editorial design, but also the importance of its content in promoting reflection on contemporary Portuguese architecture and its role in the democratic context.
