Luis Ferreira Alves Award 2025: Exhibition and book launched in Porto

The event was attended by architects, photographers, students, institutional representatives and the public, including the family of the honouree and the award winners Cyril Weiner (2nd Prize), Sergio Belinchón (3rd Prize), Amelia Lancaster (Special Mention) and the representative of Iranian photographer Maho (1st Prize).

The session began with a speech by the Mayor of Porto, Dr. Rui Moreira, who highlighted the value of Luis Ferreira Alves' work in promoting Portuguese architecture and in the international recognition of masters such as Fernando Távora, Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura. The choice of the Old Town Hall reinforced the symbolism of the event, linking the photographer's memory to the architectural tradition of the city.

One of the most eagerly awaited moments was the presentation of the publication Prémio Luis Ferreira Alves | Edição 2025, coordinated by architect Pedro Leão Neto. Bilingual (Portuguese–English) and distributed internationally through a partnership between scopio Editions and Turner Publishing, the book brings together the award-winning photographic series, accompanied by critical essays and reflections on architecture.

The award ceremony was attended by representatives of the sponsors CIN, BPI/Fundação “la Caixa” and Canon, and photographer Hélène Binet, representing the international jury, emphasised the relevance of works that combine aesthetics, narrative and critical reflection on architecture.

The exhibition, open until 31 October 2025, allows the public to explore the award-winning series in dialogue with critical texts, offering a cultural and social reflection on architectural photography.

Among the institutional partners of the award, Casa da Arquitectura (CA) – Portuguese Centre for Architecture stood out as a strategic partner, reinforcing the link between photography and architecture and contributing to the consolidation of the award as an international benchmark. It should be noted that the photographer's collection has been deposited at CA since November 2021. The Luis Ferreira Alves Award also has the support of the Porto City Council, Cityscopio – Cultural Association, FAUP, CCDR-N, Instituto Fundação Marques da Silva and the Order of Architects.

With 1,495 entries from 99 countries, the first edition of the award established itself as an international platform for reflection on architecture through photography, extending the legacy of Luis Ferreira Alves and creating a space for debate and cultural memory that connects the past, present and future.
