Prime Minister at the opening of Casa da Arquitectura
In the speech he delivered after a visit to the new premises at Real Vinícola, in Matosinhos, António Costa said that the “State will fill in the registration as a member of Casa da Arquitectura”.
“There is no other municipality where architecture has been as remarkable as the territory's transforming capacity. Matosinhos knew how to understand this unique capacity of architecture to change the territory and, in doing so, transform people's lives”, observed the prime minister.
Praising the equipment “extraordinary for the country as a whole”, the government official highlighted the fact that it is “a municipal project”, something that shows that the municipalities “have an open view of the world”, as well as “the ability to understand that today the insertion in global networks implies projects of this nature”.
For Costa, the fact that Casa da Arquitectura was designed and developed by the Municipality of Matosinhos gives “a great lesson to those who think that municipalities have a parochial vision of their territory and their function”. The prime minister noted that the The General Directorate of Cultural Heritage has already signed a collaboration protocol with Casa da Arquitectura and asked for an application for the State to be associated with the equipment.
At the time, António Costa, classified as “essential” to preserve the “unique competence” that the law currently restricts to architects to sign architectural projects, stating that he is “shudder” when they talk about legislative changes in this matter. “I always get chilled when I hear that they want to change the legislation again to go back to one of the greatest civilizational gains that the country has had in recent years and that it was definitely to establish that architectural projects are the exclusive competence of architects and that no other profession, however useful that it is the construction, does not substitute the hand, the drawing and the unique knowledge that only an architect knows how to have”, affirmed the ruler.
António Costa also considered that “preserving this unique and exclusive competence of architects is absolutely essential”.
"I hope that it lasts," said the Prime Minister.
In his intervention, Costa recalled that it was Guilherme Pinto, the former president of the Matosinhos municipality who died in January, who “challenged him to learn about the project” while it was still under construction.
It was at that moment that the prime minister realized that he was facing “an extraordinary project for the country as a whole” and that he promised the former mayor to be present at Casa’s opening.
Costa noted that “Portuguese architecture has been a great opportunity for the country, contributing to a change in the country's image in the world, which has an immaterial value”.
