Casa da Arquitectura's 7th anniversary: party from 22nd to 24th November

On 22, 23 and 24 November, Casa da Arquitectura celebrates seven years of activities Portuguese Centre for Architecture and has planned three days of festivities with free admission and a varied programme full of offers you can't refuse.
In the year commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the April Revolution and days after the opening of the exhibition ‘O que faz falta. 50 years of Portuguese architecture in democracy’, Casa da Arquitectura is paying tribute, on its 7th anniversary, to architect and urban planner Nuno Portas, a leading figure in the design of policies for housing, urban regeneration and urban planning in democratic Portugal, by awarding him the title of Honorary Associate 2024 at a ceremony on Saturday 23rd November.

Nuno Portas studied at the Instituto Nun'Alvares and the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes do Porto, where he graduated in Architecture in 1959. He collaborated with Nuno Teotónio Pereira at the Rua da Alegria studio from 1957 to 1974, the year in which he took on the role of Secretary of State for Housing and Urban Planning (1974-1975), launching SAAL - Serviço de Apoio Ambulatório Local (Local Ambulatory Support Service), a state programme aimed at meeting the housing needs of the country's underprivileged populations that became an unparalleled reference in the history of national and even international architecture in terms of popular participation in housing and urban design processes.

He was a researcher at the National Civil Engineering Laboratory between 1963 and 1981, where he founded the Architecture, Housing and Urbanism Research Centre (1965). He taught at various institutions, founding the Architecture course in Porto and launching the master's programme in Planning and Design of the Urban Environment.

He was an architectural critic for various Portuguese and foreign magazines and was awarded the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Prize for Art Criticism in 1965. From 1958 to 1970 he directed the magazine ‘Arquitectura’. In 1984 he published ‘Portogallo Architettura 1965-1990’.
Between 1980 and 1983 he was the coordinator of inter-municipal planning for Madrid - metropolitan area and was a consultant for various urban development plans in Portugal and Spain.

He was a consultant to the United Nations and the European Union and also collaborated with the Republic of Cape Verde in preparing its first urban planning legislation. He was elected a councillor on the Vila Nova de Gaia City Council (1989-1994) and a member of the Vila Viçosa Municipal Assembly.

However, throughout the three days of festivities, there are many reasons to join us.

The anniversary programme also includes the 2nd edition of the SHIFT* International Seminar on Architecture and Sustainability, the awarding of titles to the Young Ambassadors of Architecture, a talk as part of the exhibition's Parallel Programme ‘What's missing’, workshops, performances, guided tours and a concert by FAUP's arquiCoro in the exhibition space.

At the same time, MOR Design's ‘Made in Portugal’ exhibition will be open to the public, featuring high-quality pieces created in collaboration with renowned artisans and designers, including Álvaro Siza Vieira, Manuel Aires Mateus, Keiji Takeuchi and Kengo Kuma.
