Álvaro Siza Vieira receives the Piranesi Prix de Rome 2025 at Casa da Arquitectura
On 13 October, Casa da Arquitectura will host the presentation of the Piranesi Prix de Rome Career Award 2025 to Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, an honour awarded by the Scientific Committee of the Piranesi Prix de Rome, in collaboration with the Order of Architects of Rome and Province and Studio Cor, run by architect Roberto Cremascoli, from Porto.
The Casa da Arquitectura will be the venue for the presentation of the Piranesi Prix de Rome Career Award 2025 to Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, a distinction awarded by the Scientific Committee of the Piranesi Prix de Rome, in collaboration with the Order of Architects of Rome and Province and Studio Cor, run by architect Roberto Cremascoli, from Porto.
The ceremony will take place on 13 October 2025 and will include a Lectio Magistralis by Álvaro Siza, in which the architect will revisit the most relevant moments of his career, with an emphasis on projects linked to cultural heritage. The event will also feature a Laudatio by Eduardo Souto de Moura and comments by Gonçalo Byrne and João Luís Carrilho da Graça, all previous winners of the Piranesi Prix de Rome.
The recognition of Álvaro Siza adds a new chapter to the history of the Piranesi Prix de Rome, joining internationally renowned figures such as Rafael Moneo, David Chipperfield, Peter Eisenman, Bernard Tschumi, Yoshio Taniguchi, Eduardo Souto de Moura, and Mario Botta.
Álvaro Siza was born in Matosinhos in 1933. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts of the University of Porto and collaborated with Fernando Távora.
He is a Professor, member of several international academies and winner of the Pritzker Prize (1992).
His work, developed since 1958, includes emblematic projects such as the Boa Nova Tea House, the Tidal Pool, the Malagueira housing complex in Évora, the Faculty of Architecture of Porto, the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, the Portuguese Pavilion at EXPO '98, among many others in Portugal, Spain, Brazil, South Korea and China. He is also noted for his involvement in the reconstruction of Chiado in Lisbon and for his sacred architecture projects in Portugal and France.
Siza is recognised for his unique style, which reinvents the relationship between interior and exterior, light, lines and volumes, creating a contemporary, elegant and deeply human architecture. His works remain living lessons in creativity, rigour and beauty.
