The exhibition Architecture Drawn Politics. On Manuel Correia Fernandes, on display at Casa da Arquitectura until 26 April 2026, is accompanied by a parallel programme that broadens and deepens the central issues of the architect's thinking and practice. More than just a series of complementary events, this programme is intended to be an active space for debate and reflection on the city, the territory, housing and the civic role of architects, themes that have been central to his career. Through guided visits, conferences and round tables, different perspectives and scales of analysis are brought together, emphasising a vision of architecture that is inseparable from its political, social and cultural dimensions, and reaffirming the relevance of Manuel Correia Fernandes' legacy today.

Conference-debate ‘The City on the Table’

There are countless problems in Greater Porto, just as there are multiple ideas for the city that have yet to be realised. In this session, Manuel Correia Fernandes presents, in a performative conference format, using words and drawings, several ideas launched at the beginning of the Municipal Master Plan review process (2015-2017). It will also be an opportunity to discuss some pressing issues, from Avenida da Boavista to the new slaughterhouse, including the EN12/Circunvalação Metropolitan Qualification Programme, as well as projects to strengthen the city's relationship with the river and the Douro crossings.

4 p.m.
Debate ‘The Return to the Centre’
At a time when we are celebrating twenty-five years of Porto 2001 - European Capital of Culture, the starting point for the important project to revitalise the urban centre of Porto, this round table takes advantage of National Historic Centres Day to discuss the current problems facing the urban centres of our cities. If, at the beginning of the century, desertification and the degradation of buildings were the main issues of the ‘return to downtown,’ today, the excesses of tourism, the price of housing, and the lack of spaces and facilities that allow families to settle present new challenges that determine who can live in the centre.

Debate ‘A city is not an island’

Many of the projects implemented in our cities are confined to municipal boundaries, with a lack of coordination with neighbouring municipalities. Created in 1992, the Porto Metropolitan Area has not yet been able to effectively promote strategic coordination between the various municipalities that comprise it, in terms of mobility and transport, housing and the economy. However, metropolitan areas are now the main vehicle for enhancing the value of the local territory and promoting it internationally. This round table will discuss the opportunities and challenges of intermunicipality and the metropolitan scale. What is the strength and what are the future projects for the Porto Municipal Area?

28 MAR 2026
4 p.m.
Debate ‘Living in the City’
The current housing crisis is an urgent problem that affects a large part of the Portuguese population. While the diagnosis is shared by many, the solutions proposed to resolve it are far from convergent. The European Commission itself is presenting measures and proposals that are bolder than those that Portugal has been able to implement in recent years, amid inertia and bureaucracy. This round table seeks to discuss possible strategies for tackling the housing crisis, ranging from the return of associations and cooperative models, which were so important in building the housing stock in the early decades of democracy, to the mobilisation of vacant or abandoned properties in the rental market.

Each discovery counts as part of a first dialogue with the territory and with others.

4pm
Debate: ‘The Place of Architects’

What is the role of architecture and architects in society? Since the emergence of the modern project, architecture has been situated on the threshold between its material and formal issues and its political and social dimensions. Today, more than ever, the matrix of its practice and teaching remains open, divided between disciplinary autonomy and political, civic and social implications. This round table allows for a comparison of different perspectives resulting from the articulation of various areas of knowledge.
