"Selection" Debate
The “Selection” debate, part of the Parallel Programme of the exhibition Radar Veneza – Portuguese Architects at the Biennale 1975-2021, was based on the Portuguese experience at the Venice Biennale, the practice of other countries and other biennials, seeking to contribute to the exploration of possible paths for the selection methods of future national representations in the oldest architectural biennial.
The aim was to discuss the methods of representation selection: direct support with commitment of interest and without national selection as in other biennials? Open competition in two phases or limited competition by invitation? National or international?
Opting for turnkey production or in collaboration with structures with international production experience? What about the juries, direct nomination and selection committees or random drawing among a wide range of eligible persons recognized among peers and society?
These were some of the questions to which we sought to find answers.
