Fernanda Seixas Collection Donation

Fernanda Seixas: collection of the pioneering architect at Casa da Arquitectura

"Fernanda Seixas left a work that allows many possible angles of exploration, both as a person-architect and as a technician, very diverse projects and developed in equally very distinct contexts, and awaits the recognition of her value, of her place in the disciplinary field of Architecture."
These statements were made by the architect Sara Sucena at the Donation Ceremony of the collection of the architect Fernanda Seixas, held on 20 November, as part of the celebrations of the 5th anniversary of Casa da Arquitectura.
Sara Sucena shared with the architect João Ferreira the task of presenting the work and the person of the architect Fernanda Seixas, who saw in her "profession as an architect (...) her space for political affirmation, politics in an understanding that transcends parties."
The only woman to lead a Technical Brigade of the Northern Area Ambulatory Service (SAAL), Fernanda Seixas was, as João Ferreira recalled, "a pioneer in Portugal in the integration of compensated energy systems and in the design of buildings with passive solar use, in close cooperation with engineers from FEUP, namely Professors Maldonado and Oliveira Fernandes".
But it was not only in the field of civic and political intervention that Fernanda Seixas was a pioneer. For the architect "the project was a shared task".
Sara Sucena emphasises: "This aspect of sharing is especially significant as Fernanda Seixas had her own office in the city of Oporto since the 1980s, an exceptional condition, especially as she was a woman in a male profession".
The collection of Fernanda Seixas handed over to Casa's Arquive consists of approximately 10 thousand items, including drawings, textual documents and photographs.
