"O que faz falta" (excerpt) is part of Madrid´s International Architecture Week

The Casa da Arquitectura (CA) is part of the 22nd Madrid International Architecture Week, which this year has Portugal as its guest country, with the exhibition O que faz falta (fragmento) – 50 anos de Arquitetura Portuguesa em Democracia (1974–2023), on display between 3 and 13 October. The exhibition condenses the argument and content of the exhibition originally presented at the CA in Matosinhos, on the occasion of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Revolution.

The title of the exhibition echoes José Afonso's song O que faz falta (1974) and the curatorial proposal emphasises the urgency of architecture as a right and public service, a mirror of social transformations and a catalyst for the construction of democratic space. This travelling exhibition presents five works representing the five modules of the original selection of 49 works and one project, each in dialogue with cultural references and practices such as cinema, literature and the visual arts, making architecture visible as a cultural practice and political agent. In addition to a chronological reading in five moments, the exhibition highlights revolutionary programmes, with an emphasis on access to housing and culture as fundamental pillars of democratic society.

Madrid International Architecture Week is an initiative of the Official College of Architects of Madrid (COAM), the COAM Architecture Foundation and Madrid City Council, in collaboration with the Community of Madrid. It takes place annually in the first week of October, with the aim of bringing architecture closer to citizens and enhancing architectural heritage.
