Read April in Architecture - The Impact of April 25th on Portuguese Architecture

The activity Read April in Architecture - The impact of April 25 on Portuguese Architecture is an opportunity for students of the 9th grade and above to gain a better understanding of one of the most significant moments in contemporary Portuguese history, the April 25th Revolution, and how it affected Portuguese life and architecture.
From a personal diary, architect Conceição Melo recounts the daily life of a 15-year-old high school student and tells, in the first person, how she lived before and after April 25 and how this path led her to architecture. Secondly, she reflects on the changes brought about by the April revolution in architecture in Portugal, looking at the transformations generated by April's achievements in public space, equipment and housing. Finally, she talks about the internationalization of Portuguese architecture, in particular the two architects who won the Pritzker Prize: Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura.

Buildings and the way they are put together are the physical expression that supports our life in society and, as such, they were the place where the new public policies that emerged from April 74 were put into practice, bringing about radical changes in our architecture and our cities.
On the other hand, April 25 attracted the attention of many specialists to Portugal and Portuguese architecture. From this interest emerges the international recognition of our architecture, with special emphasis on the architect Álvaro Siza.
