17 to 19 November 2023
6th anniversary of Casa da Arquitectura
This month marks the sixth anniversary of the opening of Casa da Arquitectura in the Real Vinícola neighbourhood. As usual, the Casa's anniversary is the reason for three days of open doors and a varied programme tailor-made for all audiences. On 17, 18 and 19 November, there will be guided and inclusive tours, debates, installations, workshops, quizzes, workshops, conferences and much more. Entry is free to all events.
On its 6th anniversary, Casa da Arquitectura will dedicate part of its programme to reflecting on the pressing issue of "Architecture in a Context of Emergency", an initiative supported by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Action.
During the three days of the celebration, a video installation will be on show at the Luis Ferreira Alves Space, which addresses the challenges facing architecture today and how to respond in a world in turmoil.
"Architecture in a Context of Emergency" is also the theme that will bring together Lígia Nunes, Founder of Architects without Borders - Portugal, Maria Neto, winner of the 2015/16 Távora Prize, and Pedro Gadanho, architect and author of the book "Climax Change - How Architecture must transform in the age of ecological emergency", on Friday 17th, from 5.30pm at the Álvaro Siza Space. Miguel Veríssimo is moderating.
On Friday, the day ends with an architecture quiz from 9.30pm, which will test architecture lovers' encyclopaedic knowledge in the Central Pavilion.
On Saturday 18 November, the House's six-year anniversary will be celebrated from 3.30pm in the Álvaro Siza Space with the awarding of Honorary Memberships to two key figures in the contemporary architecture scene: architects Kenneth Frampton and Jean-Louis Cohen, the latter of whom recently passed away and to whom a special tribute will be dedicated by architect Joaquim Moreno.
As part of the Parallel Programme of the Paulo Mendes da Rocha exhibitions on show, Kenneth Frampton will give a lecture on the Brazilian architect and Pritzker Prize winner, entitled "Mendes da Rocha: Territorial Architect 1958-2008". The lecture will be given in English, with simultaneous translation.
Next Sunday, 19th November, Casa da Arquitectura will be presenting the "50 years of Contemporary Portuguese Architecture" collection at the Álvaro Siza Space from 3.30pm. This collection will be open to all interested parties for study and research, and in the future it will be used for various thematic readings in exhibitions, activities and publications. At the same event, the exhibition dedicated to the contribution of architecture to Portuguese democracy will also be presented, as part of the 50th Anniversary of 25 April Commemorations Programme. The curators and others involved in the projects will be present, namely Nuno Sampaio, who will be opening, Ana Neiva, Ana Resende, Atelier do Corvo, Carlos Machado e Moura, Graça Correia, João Belo Rodeia, João Castro, Jorge Figueira and Paula Melâneo.
Numerous guided and inclusive visits to the exhibitions on display, the Casa's archives and the works in the Siza Itinerary fill the programme over the three days, offering excellent opportunities to get to know the Casa's exhibitions and spaces in detail.
As part of a partnership with the Constantino Nery Theatre, this venue will also be open to visitors on Sunday under the guidance of architect Alexandre Alves Costa.
As usual, the Casa da Arquitectura's Education Service has prepared a menu of activities for children and families that will take place over the three days and will revolve around a metallic structure by Catari that will be set up in the Central Pavilion.
Not to be missed are the workshops for families organised by the architectural studios Pablo Pita Arquitetos, Atelier Murmuro, Masslab and Diogo Aguiar Studio.
