26th April 2025

Visits to the Thalia Theatre and the D. Dinis School led by architects Gonçalo Byrne and Ricardo Bak Gordon

Bringing the public closer to some of the most striking works of Portuguese architecture is the main aim of the Itinerary promoted by Casa da Arquitectura as part of the parallel programme of the exhibition ‘O que faz falta. 50 years of architecture in democracy’. The cycle includes ten visits to landmark works in different parts of the country, always guided by experts, offering an in-depth perspective on some of the works featured in the exhibition, which runs until September.
The first two visits will take place on Saturday 26 April, when Casa da Arquitectura has prepared a day (see programme) dedicated to contemporary Portuguese architecture, marking five decades of democracy in Portugal.

At 11am, architect Gonçalo Byrne will lead a tour of the Thalia Theatre, and at 4pm, architect Ricardo Bak Gordon will lead a tour of the D. Dinis School, both in Lisbon.

Aimed at all audiences, this programme offers a unique opportunity for direct and in-depth contact with some of the most significant projects in Portuguese architecture over the last 50 years. The full schedule of visits will be announced soon.

11h00
Thalia Theatre (2008-2012)
Guided tour by architect Gonçalo Byrne
The stage for parties and operas in the 19th century, destroyed by a fire in 1862, this theatre is located next to the palace and gardens of Quinta das Laranjeiras. The reconstruction transformed it into a new space for exhibitions, conferences and events. The intervention restored the original façade, and the walls of the audience and stage were covered on the outside with terracotta-pigmented concrete, reconstructing the original volume. The ruins of the interior act as a counterpoint to the new glazed ground floor (entrance, cafeteria and services), which forms a small square and delimits the new street front. Sign up HERE.

D. Dinis Secondary School Dinis Secondary School (2007-2009)
Guided tour by architect Ricardo Bak Gordon
The renovation of the pavilion school, the dominant type in the country, is part of the Parque Escolar programme, which began in 2007 and involved around thirty teams of architects with the aim of modernising 173 secondary schools. The intervention replaces the central courtyard with a building with an auditorium, library and work spaces. The existing buildings are unified by informal learning spaces along an accessible route - learning street - as well as by the continued use of corrugated sheet cladding, emphasising the formal contrast with the other pavilions.
